ThinkClay
I got some Sculpey III 010 Translucent and some Premo! Sculpey 5323 Green, because I wanted to test out just how translucent this kind of polymer clay would be once cooked.
It ended up being not very translucent at all. Especially, because I baked it for too long and it ended up yellowing. Whoops.
I also learned, for next time I use this stuff, that I have to refrigerate the polymer clay before I use it, or it will pretty much melt in my hands as I try to work it. Which is very strange, because you bake it to make it harden.
Incidentally, I have no idea what the difference between Sculpey III and Premo! Sculpey is. They have about the same texture and they have the same bake temperature and bake length.

Hi Laurel, I might be able to help you a bit. First of all there is a huge difference between Sculpey III and Premo. Sculpey III is a much lower grade clay and with be softer, stickier and weaker when baked. The translucent is also not as clear as the Premo translucent is. You didn’t bake your piece too long. I bake all my Premo pieces for an hour or more. It turned yellow, due to either a spike in temperature or a dirty oven. You will find Premo is firmer than Sculpey III when cool and will show fingerprints less. If you need any more help, you can ask me at my blog. Hope that helps a bit.
As usual, inspiring to see your work.
I’ve only ever bought the Fimo clays and then hand it over to my kids to play with – so I can add little to the discussion.
I would imagine that translucency would depend on thickness as well.
Are you going to particpate in Thing-A-Day this year. Registration is now open and, if it is like last year, will be closed from 01-Feb.
